Action.ML Hackathon

Can you hack it?

This October 26-27th, come take part in the Action.ML Hackathon hosted by FOX! As an event centered around challenge and innovation, you’ll play a pivotal role in helping conceptualize and create solutions to propel FOX forward. All ASU students are welcome to participate, collaborate, and learn from each other. Registration is complimentary, and there will be free food, prizes, and swag.

Challenge Statement

To compete, students should be familiar with or eager to learn one of the following fields:

  • Machine Learning
  • Computer Science
  • Cloud Computing
  • Business Analytics & Modeling

Student teams will be given 24 hours of time to hack within a 30-hour event to design and develop a machine learning algorithm that can process high resolution video content. Student teams of 3-5 can either be assembled ahead of time or will be matched at the start of the event. Teams will be given a set of labeled images to train their machine learning algorithms, with the intent of extracting data features from the images and using these engineered features to build a model that can predict and label additional images with relevant tags. To win the competition, teams will need to process this video as it streams in nearly real-time, taking into consideration accuracy and fluid prediction syncing. Furthermore, the student models will need to display predicted tags alongside the video in a novel way which improves the user experience. Students will have a chance to network with FOX leadership. In addition to the knowledge acquired by students competing in the challenge, workshops will be facilitated throughout the event to teach students the skills necessary to be competitive.

FAQ

What is a hackathon?

We know what you may think, “I’m hacking a system,” but it’s slightly different than that. A hackathon is an event that fosters collaboration, community, and networking. This is a chance to let your brain run free, the sky’s the limit. You’ll have a specific challenge given to you at the start of the event. This challenge will dictate what you create, but it will be software-based.

Do I need to create a team before arriving?

o Nope! If you have one, great! If not, we’ve provided time onsite to form teams before the hackathon begins.

How many people can a team have?

A team can have between 3 and 5 members.

Who can participate?

Any Arizona State University student is welcome to participate. Whether you’re an undergraduate, or graduate-level student, you’re free to come.

Should I bring anything?

You’ll want to bring a laptop, or something you can hack on. You’re not required to stay overnight, but if you are, we recommend at least bringing a toothbrush, toiletries, sleeping bag, and a change of clothes. Don’t forget your student ID for check-in!

How long is the hackathon?

The hackathon will last 30 hours from start to finish, and you will have roughly 24 hours of hacking.

What about food?

We’ll provide breakfast, lunch, and dinner on day one, and breakfast and lunch on day two. Snacks will also be given throughout.

Is there a cost?

There is not a cost to register.

Do I have to stay the whole time?

While we recommend you stay the full time of the hackathon, it’s not a requirement. We understand classes are a priority and life happens, so if you need to leave and come back that’s perfectly alright.

Who can register?

Any ASU student. Those that intend to compete should be familiar or eager to learn with one of the following fields:

  • Machine Learning
  • Computer Science
  • Cloud Computing
  • Business Analytics & Modeling

All skill levels are welcome, from beginner to advanced. You each have something to bring to the table!

Tell me about Slack.

We’ll be utilizing Slack as the main form of communication during the event. As a participant, you’ll be added to the hackathon’s Slack channel for updates and reminders. Please keep an eye on it. If you’ve never used Slack, here’s an intro for you.

Are there any conduct guidelines?

Yes! Please review the ASU Student Code of Conduct. This is an event occurring on ASU’s campus, therefore we will abide by all ASU policies. This will be enforced throughout the event. Do not bring any weapons, knives, firearms, drugs or alcohol to this event. Please utilize this opportunity to create a new idea or project, and don’t use one from a previous event. We expect all participants to be courteous and respectful of each other and their ideas.
